When you first find out you’re expecting, the journey ahead can feel overwhelming, exciting, and a little nerve-wracking – for both of you. Pregnancy isn’t just a time for mums to connect with their growing baby; it’s a time for dads to step into one of the most important roles of their lives.

Dear Dads and Dads-to-be

Please don't worry. At all. I am here to let you in on a little secret: We need you, more than you can imagine.

As a mum, having your partner’s presence during pregnancy and birth means everything. It’s not just about being there for the “big day” but about walking the path together – every step of the way.

As a daughter, I can clearly say that having a father whose strong presence deeply influenced me and at the same time always inspired me was the most beautiful gift on earth.

During Pregnancy: Your Strength is Our Anchor

Pregnancy can be a rollercoaster, physically and emotionally. Your partner may not always say it, but your steady presence provides a sense of calm and security. Whether it’s holding her hand at appointments, rubbing her back on a tough day, or simply listening to her worries, you remind her she’s not alone in this journey.

As dads, your involvement during pregnancy also strengthens your bond with your baby. Talking to the bump, reading about the changes happening, and sharing in those magical moments, like feeling the first kicks, make the experience truly shared. It’s not just her pregnancy – it’s yours too.

At Birth: The Power of Being Present

Birth is one of the most transformative experiences in a woman’s life. Having you there – calm, supportive, and engaged – makes all the difference. Your presence isn’t just practical; it’s empowering. Whether you’re guiding her through Hypnobirthing breathing techniques, reminding her of her strength, or simply being her rock, you’re helping to create a safe and loving environment for the arrival of your child.

For many mums, just knowing their partner is by their side can ease fear and anxiety. It’s about teamwork: her body may be doing the physical work, but your emotional support is invaluable. And when you hold that baby for the first time, everything shifts. You’ll realize your role didn’t just begin; it’s been unfolding all along.

For Baby: The Foundation of Love

From day one, your baby is watching, feeling, and learning from you. Studies show that involved dads positively influence their child’s emotional development, confidence, and resilience. Babies thrive on connection, and your voice, touch, and presence are just as soothing and essential as mum’s.

Playing, laughing, and bonding with your little one builds a foundation of trust and love that shapes their future relationships and well-being. And when they see the way you support their mum, you’re teaching them how to love and care for others too.

Some wise words say, that fatherhood isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present  but also that the greatest gift a father can give is his time, his love, and his strength. And actually, being present, being part of the family is half the battle. Of course, raising a child takes some work and commitment. As a dad, you often wonder whether you are handling certain situations correctly. I think that is normal and absolutely unavoidable. But as wise voices have already said, it is not about being perfect. It is about your energy, your love and your time that you give to your child(ren).

You’re Not Just There – You’re Everything

Your role as a father begins long before the baby is born. It’s in the way you show up for your partner, the way you connect with the life you’re bringing into the world, and the way you set the tone for your family’s future.

Being present – emotionally and physically – is the greatest gift you can give to your partner and your child. Together, you’re creating something extraordinary: a family built on love, support, and trust. And in that, you are irreplaceable.

So, to all the dads-to-be: You’re not just a witness to this journey; you’re a vital part of it. You are their anchor, their strength, and their safe place. Your presence matters more than you’ll ever know.

Final words

As I write these words, I can’t help but think of my own dad – the man who shaped so much of who I am today, even though he’s no longer here. His love, his guidance, and his presence still echo in my life, reminding me of the profound and lasting impact fathers have on their children.

Dads, you are more than providers or protectors – you are builders of confidence, creators of joy, and anchors of stability. The way you listen, love, and show up becomes a blueprint for how your children see themselves and the world around them. You are their first teacher, their biggest cheerleader, and their safe haven.

Even when you feel like you’re just doing “the little things” – a hug, a bedtime story, a silly dance in the living room – those are the moments your children will carry with them forever. It’s those everyday acts of love that shape their hearts, their confidence, and their sense of belonging.

To every dad: you are so important. You matter deeply – not just to your children, but to the partners who walk this journey with you. Your presence is powerful. Your love is unforgettable. And the legacy you leave in your children’s hearts is the greatest gift of all.

Thank you for everything you do. You are extraordinary. So go on, be a kick-ass dad! And one day, you might even get the chance to be a kick-ass grand-dad.
